Katherine Sabbath – Cake Creative, Author, Teacher and Business Owner – teaches us how cake changed her life and made her a viral sensation
In our third instalment of Under the Palms, we chatted with Katherine Sabbath who routinely makes our mouths water with her confectionary concoctions. Last time we worked together, she created some insane baked goods to celebrate the launch of Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power and Citadel (and we’re still thinking about them).
Explain your job as if you’re talking to a 10-year-old.
I help people celebrate by teaching them how to make epic and delicious cakes, through writing cookbooks, hosting classes and making viral videos. I like to encourage my community to ‘bake’ someone’s day.
What was your biggest failure/mistake you’ve ever made and how did you turn it into a positive?
After successfully crowd-funding the world’s first pop-up cookbook in 2016, I realised we had severely undercharged for the postage costs of each book. They were almost 3kgs each and we needed to ship 4,000 cookbooks worldwide! I ended up taking out a huge loan and going into personal debt in order to make sure I fulfilled my end of the bargain to our backers and community. It was a massive financial gamble but thankfully, the cookbook (Katherine Sabbath Greatest Hits), ended up being extremely popular and we sold out two print runs.
What has been your top career highlight?
Writing three best-selling cookbooks and being a guest host on Play School, an ABC Kids program.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I can lick my elbow (it’s meant to be impossible haha) and I used to be a high school History & Geography teacher.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
I love a good supermarket mud cake, shared with mates!
