How many Aussies are on each social media platform?

A staggering 62.5% of the world’s population is on social media these days. Platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and TikTok have become as much a part of our daily lives as our morning coffee and commute.

Constantly refined algorithms consistently hook the masses to these content machines, flooding minds with dopamine hits and allowing hours to waste in what feels like minutes.

When casting an eye over the Australian social media landscape, research suggests around 78% of the nation’s population actively uses social media each month. Even if this figure is down 2.3% year-on-year, that still equates to 20.80 million active Aussie social media users.

There are plenty of platforms for Australians to choose from for their social media fix, but which is the favourite of the nation? Research suggests these are the nation’s ten most popular social media platforms in 2024.

  1. Facebook – 19 million monthly active users
  2. YouTube – 18 million monthly active users
  3. WhatsApp  – 12 million monthly active users
  4. Instagram – 10 million active monthly users
  5. LinkedIn – 6.5 million active monthly users
  6. Snapchat – 6.4 million active monthly users
  7. X (Twitter) – 6 million active monthly users
  8. TikTok – 4.2 million active monthly users
  9. Tumblr – 2.7 million active monthly users
